How to Use SafeBuddy

This guide mirrors the in-app “How to Use” page.

1. Initial Setup

  • Install SafeBuddy from Google Play Store
  • Launch the app and complete onboarding
  • Grant permissions for Notifications, SMS, Location, and Overlay
  • Add trusted contacts who will receive emergency notifications
  • Configure email backup (optional but recommended)

2. Daily Check-In System

The check-in system is the core of SafeBuddy:

  • Open the app and tap the "I am Safe" button
  • Set reminder frequency in Settings (1-24 hours)
  • Choose quick options (1, 2, 4, 8, 12 hours) or use custom slider
  • Check in regularly to prevent unnecessary alerts

3. Reminder System

SafeBuddy reminds you when it's time to check in:

  • Notification reminders appear at scheduled times
  • Vibration alerts can be enabled for additional notice
  • Respond quickly by opening the notification
  • Background monitoring ensures reminders work even when app is closed

4. Escalation Protocol

If you miss check-ins, SafeBuddy follows a progressive escalation:

  • Pre-warning (1 missed reminder): Gentle reminder
  • Soft escalation (2 missed reminders): Notify trusted contacts
  • Hard escalation (3+ missed reminders): Emergency SMS with location
  • Background SMS can be enabled for automatic emergency alerts

5. Lock Screen SOS

Emergency access without unlocking your phone:

  • Enable in Settings under Emergency Features
  • Grant overlay permission when prompted
  • Access SOS button directly from lock screen
  • Immediate alerts sent to all trusted contacts

6. Notification Settings

Customize how SafeBuddy communicates with you:

  • Enable/disable notifications based on your preference
  • Control vibration for discreet or prominent alerts
  • Manage permissions for SMS, Location, and Calls
  • Background settings for emergency automation

7. Email Backup Configuration

Add an extra layer of reliability:

  • Go to Settings → Email Backup
  • Configure SMTP settings for your email provider
  • Test email delivery to ensure it works
  • Use as backup when SMS is unavailable

8. Trusted Contacts Management

Your emergency network is crucial:

  • Add reliable contacts who will respond to emergencies
  • Include phone numbers for SMS and calls
  • Inform your contacts they're part of your safety network
  • Update regularly when contact information changes
  • Test notifications to ensure they receive alerts

9. Location Services

Share your location during emergencies:

  • Enable location permission in device settings
  • Choose accuracy level (GPS, Network, or both)
  • Location included in emergency SMS and alerts
  • Maps link helps contacts find you quickly

10. Testing Your Setup

Regular testing ensures everything works when needed:

  • Weekly: Test check-in reminders
  • Monthly: Verify contact notifications
  • Quarterly: Test Lock Screen SOS
  • After updates: Re-test all features

11. Troubleshooting Common Issues

Notifications Not Working

  • Check notification permissions in device settings
  • Ensure SafeBuddy is not blocked by battery optimizer
  • Verify Do Not Disturb settings allow SafeBuddy

SMS Not Sending

  • Confirm SMS permission is granted
  • Check network connectivity
  • Verify contact phone numbers are correct

Background Monitoring Issues

  • Disable battery optimization for SafeBuddy
  • Ensure WorkManager permissions are granted
  • Check if app is force-stopped by system

12. Best Practices

  • Keep phone charged - SafeBuddy needs power to work
  • Maintain network connection - Required for most features
  • Update app regularly - Get latest safety improvements
  • Inform trusted contacts - Let them know about SafeBuddy
  • Have backup plans - Don't rely solely on technology

13. Emergency Procedures

In real emergencies:

  1. Call local emergency services first (911, 112, etc.)
  2. Use Lock Screen SOS for immediate alert to contacts
  3. Check in manually if you're safe to stop escalation
  4. Contact trusted contacts directly if possible

Remember: SafeBuddy is a safety tool, not a replacement for professional emergency services. Always prioritize calling local emergency services in life-threatening situations.
